I went out to the hazel bush,
There was a fire in my head.
I cut a fishing rod out of it
and went out into the night.
When the moon saw the stars< br/>I went to the river that was silver,
caught a fish as clear as the moon
with my dark hazel stick.
Refrain: There was a fire in my head,
now I have to fetch every night
the sun's golden apples
and the silver ones from the moon.
In the moonlight I wanted to carry my catch home from the valley,
then I heard the wind in the grass
say my name.
In front of me stood in the grass on the bank
a young man, beautiful and wonderful,
with apple blossoms in his hair,< br/>which I have often seen in my dreams.
Refrain: There was a fire in my head,
now I have to fetch golden apples from the sun every night
and the silver ones of the moon.
He looked at me and I forgot
the green valley and around me was
suddenly a deep sleep
which I haven't seen ending yet.
Since then I have been traveling through this world
with a hazel staff, where apples bloom
and hoping when moonlight falls on me
to see the young man there from the river.
