I Never Was
I never was quite good enough – I was always secondhand.
I never seemed to measure up – nor seemed to understand –
What was expected of me – how to live, to seem, to be;
I never could quite get it right and often couldn’t see –
The wood for all the trees – it seemed - or anything else too –
All I know is that I needed - and in my way I loved - you.
I never was quite good enough at making you feel good
And loved and wanted in the way I now know that I should.
I don’t yet know why I couldn’t do
The things I know you wanted to.
Why was it I was so blind to them –
Oh, for all our time again.
I never was quite good enough at being one of two –
Nor keeping all my love bound up alone and just with you.
I don’t know why this should be so –
But I think I know why you had to go.
Why was it I thought I couldn’t be –
What you seemed to want of me?
