That Big Old House
That Big Old House
That big old house we lived in was no country mansion grand;
Without much to commend it – it was even built on sand!
The roof leaked, the floors squeaked, the walls were always wet;
In winter we were always cold – we don’t miss it much and yet…
Chorus:
It was home – it was our home.
It was the place that we came back to when we needed time alone.
We had all it took between us and a lot more too, besides –
To make it there together – and turn a house into a home.
That big old house we lived in was not made for luxury –
But then we didn’t need it – what we wanted most was free.
We had us and that was good enough to see us gently through;
Now I wonder where we’ve gone to and I find I’m missing you.
That big old house we lived in had a garden with a slope!
We planted all we could each year and then lived and loved in hope.
And just like what was between us – it grew in time quite well.
And if anything will grow again – only time alone will tell!
That big old house we lived in is still standing stark and still.
It’s empty now of people and perhaps it never will
See within its walls again what we had when alone –
Which was much more than was needed – to turn a house into a home!
Autumn 1997:
That big old house is gone now: there’s nothing left to see –
Now a stretch of road runs through right where it used to be;
The place our loving meant so much and made two brand new souls –
And instead of you and me, my love, just traffic rocks and rolls…
