When I Should Be
When I should be doing other things –
It’s you I do them for;
When I should be needing other things -
It’s you I need much more.
And all the while I’m singing songs -
It’s you I sing them to –
In the hope that when we’re back as one -
I’ll sing them then with you.
When I should be thinking other things –
My mind is full of you.
When I should be writing other songs –
I write them for you, too.
And all the while we’re not as one –
I’m wondering how you are –
And I keep seeing you everywhere –
In places near and far.
When I should be hearing other things –
I find I hear your name.
I often wonder if for you –
It’s ever much the same.
When I’m wondering what the future holds
For all humanity –
I can’t help but think what you will do –
And how you and I will be…
When I should be in another place
I wish myself with you.
When I talk with other people now –
It’s you I’m talking to.
When I should be thinking other things –
Apart from you and I –
Thoughts of you spin through my mind
And make me want to cry…
