Derek Sholl when they come back

He was barely nineteen, when he joined the Marines just like his daddy did.
Glory bound and bullet proof was that small town kid.
They shaved his head and shipped him out to somewhere-astan.
They gave him a gun, said get the job done.
That boy became a man.
THen for three long years, he fought hard for Company C.
Till his wheels touched down in the land of the free.
When they come back, they thank God their home.
Their older, wiser, filled with more pride than they've ever known.
Or their broken, bitter, or struggling to get past their pain.
When they come back, they don't come back the same.
He sat in his chair and stared out the window and thought about lost friends.
And what do you do when they tell you you'll never walk again.
He said I can't stay in this chair and pity myself for the rest of my life.
Cause the one thing he learned while he was over there was how to fight.
So for four long years he studied hard and he prayed for grace.
And when he got that degree we saw that old smile come across his face.
When they come back, we thank God their home.
yeah their older, wiser, filled with more peace than they've ever known.
Yeah, their stronger, bitter, and thankful to be past that pain.
When they come back, they don't come back the same.
Oh no.
When they come back, if they come back.
They don't come back the same.
