[Music - Andersen - lyrics - Frederiksen]
[Brages Cup.
A song about a toast to a dead warrior, followed by a promise to deliver a great act of courage. The god Brage was the god of poetry and the beaker (literally the beaker) drunk in his honor is the actual toast. The oath was called a Brageløfte (Brage-oath) and is probably the origin of the English verb "to brag".]
Brage's cup, the mead is poured,
Brage's cup, Mjølner is depicted,
Brage's cup, silver-plated,
Brage's cup, hear my promise.
Hear! In the name of the old woman, under the sign of Mjølner,
The mug is raised high, brothers in our hall,
Departed men, remembered for their deeds,
Drink a draft to them, and your own honor!< br/>Brage's cup, the mead is poured,
Brage's cup, Mjølner is depicted,
Brage's cup, silver-plated,
Brage's cup, hear my promise.
Hear! In the name of the old woman, under the sign of Mjølner,
The mug is lifted high, I swear.
Westward I seek, the sword sings raised,
Prosperity I promise, to the one who follows.
Brage's cup, the mead is poured,
Brage's cup, Mjølner is depicted,
Brage's cup, silver-plated,
Brage's cup, hear my promise.
Brage's cup, the mead is poured,
Brage's cup, Mjølner is depicted,
Brage's cup, silver-plated,
Brage's cup, hear my promise.
