The Old Man and the Child
The Old Man and the Child (Francesco Guccini)
An old man and a child took each other's hands
And they went together to meet in the evening.
The red dust rose in the distance
And everything shone with an untrue light.
The immense plain seemed to reach
As far as a man's eye could look,
And all around there was no one
Only the gloomy outline of towers of smoke.
The two walked, the day fell
The old man spoke and slowly cried.< br/>With an absent soul, with wet eyes
The memory of past myths followed.
The old suffer the ravages of the years
They cannot distinguish truth from dreams,
Old people do not know, in their thoughts
To distinguish the false from the true in dreams.
And the old man said, looking into the distance,
Imagine this covered with wheat,
Imagine the fruits , imagine the flowers
And think of the voices and think of the colors.
And in this plain as far as it gets lost
The trees were growing and everything was green,
The rain was falling, they were marking the suns
The rhythm of man and the seasons.''
The child stood, his gaze was sad,
And his eyes looked at things he had never seen,
And then he said to the old man with a dreamy voice
I like fairy tales, tell me more.''
